Staplecross in East Sussex Village Guide

About Staplecross in East Sussex

Staplecross lies on the B2165 between Ewhurst Green and Cripps Corner and although a small hamlet, it was important during the Middle Ages. It was the central point in the Hundred of Staple that comprised the villages of Northiam, Ewhurst Green, Bodiam, Sedlescombe and parts of Brede, Mountfield and Whatlingon. The Hundred was a Saxon institution that subdivided a Shire in one hundred hides (a unit that varied between 40 and 100 acres). Each hundred had one leader and council who was responsible for, amongst other things, the administration of justice through the “hundred court”.

Today Staplecross is a pretty village with a pub and school.
